Primitive Makeup adds glosses, pencils to award-winning natural lipstick line

BOSTON, Oct. 15, 2008 — Responding to growing demand from enthusiastic buyers and users, Primitive Makeup announced today that it has expanded its line of all-natural lipsticks to include silky glosses and lip pencils.

"Women can finally say goodbye to sticky-feeling glosses," said fashion entrepreneur and company co-founder Nancy Caigan, who made the announcement at Natural Products Expo East, a major trade show held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

The new line of lip pencils are also "luscious and creamy," she added, and provide even more options for "women who believe that beauty should not come at the expense of health."

Exquisite colors from world cultures

Like Primitive's hot-selling lipsticks, the new all-natural lip glosses and pencils are available in a range of exquisite colors — Cozumel, Rio, Corsica and Belize, to name a few — and are based on natural sources that, according to Caigan, "evoke Primitive's deep appreciation of world cultures."

Caigan's business partner, Susanna Ronner — a graphic designer and dancer with a strong sense of style and color — said the line's enticing palette was carefully selected to accentuate the natural beauty of women of all cultures. The gloss is also available in clear, which can be used alone or to highlight any color.

Sharing one of her own beauty secrets, Ronner suggested "filing your entire lip with the pencil and then top it with our glosses or lipsticks for longer wearing lip color."

"Out of hundreds of natural products that passed our criteria, your product stood head and shoulders above the rest," the editors said in a recent letter to Primitive. "You have earned our admiration for combining healthy ingredients and sustainable processes with the luxury and indulgence of high-end skincare."

Growing company, bullish market

Primitive Makeup was founded in 2003 by Caigan and Ronner and is based in Woodstock, N.Y. The company's line was initially available in New York's Hudson Valley and the capitol district before going national in 2006.

In 2007, following three years of success in boutiques and specialty shops, Primitive's all-natural line caught the attention of health-conscious buyers at Whole Foods Market, which has 199 stores in North America and the United Kingdom. Other well-known regional and national stores, including Vitamin Cottage, Central Market and Mrs. Green's, also carry the line.

According to a recent report by the Associated Press, increasingly health-conscious consumers are purchasing natural personal-care products at a record pace. The Natural Products Association estimates the industry is growing five times faster than the conventional personal-care-product sector.

Last year, U.S. sales of organic personal-care items rose 12.5 percent, when adjusted for inflation, to $465 million, according to Mintel International. The research firm estimates the inflation-adjusted figure will rise to $513 million this year, even with the tough U.S. economy.

'Healthy ingredients, sustainable processes'

Primitive's product line is paraben-free and made in the United States with pure ingredients and no artificial additives, preservatives or colors. The company's products are also exceptionally emollient and naturally conditioning.

Buyers and consumers apparently aren't the only ones excited about Primitive's line. In September 2008, the company's lipstick line earned a Beauty With a Conscience Award from Natural Solutions magazine.
